Homily

Sirach 27 reminds us ‘life is too short to harbour resentment and plan vengeance’.  Apposite for tenth anniversary of 9/11.

Romans 14 points to fundamental responsibility that our life and death have an influence on others. Matthew 18 brings the fundamental challenge of forgiveness. Some things are ‘unforgiveable’ but we still have to work for reconciliation through the God who forgives.

The setting of the 9/11 anniversary was put very well by the survivor of Belsen. ‘In life we are in the midst of death. In death we are in the midst of life’ Fr Michael, the Franciscan chaplain who was the first victim of 9/11 because he insisted on going with the firefighters. John Felicia OFM said the stuff of greatness is that a living complex person showed that ‘our willingness to say yes more than no to the events and people that make up our day teaches us the life lesson of putting others first. It is a freeing and joyful way to live.’

The homily linked then Laurence Freeman OSB talking of a drunk he befriended –  ’He stumbled away with a drunk’s sentimental gratitude for any companionship’-  with the Walk of Faith leaders through Edinburgh today to mark 9/11 to engage in ‘Friendly companionship’. Is this the way ahead after 9/11?

Prayers

These focussed on 9/11, peace in the world, the frail and sick of the parish and our young people.
